Our new computer is a Mac and I'm having difficulty using images on it for avatars. Even when I've deliberately saved a jpeg image with the suffix .jpg I can't use it as my new avatar. I keep seeing an error message to the effect that only jpeg, giff or bmp images can be used.
Any ideas welcome. |

 Actually, both. I.E. is the worst browser of the five main ones. I avoid Microsoft wherever possible (actually I avoid all commercial software where possible; free stuff is usually faster, more reliable, more user-configurable and doesn't contain the spyware and hooks in the commercial stuff).
But a non-supported old version of I.E. for Mac is definitely one to avoid.

I think you'll find it's fine. The advantage of Macs is that you get a whole pile of essential software written for the Mac by Apple and can pretty much guarantee it's all bug free (as you say, the applications work together well). The disadvantage of Macs is the lack of niche software; it's invariably written for Windows (commercial and free stuff) and also written for Linux by geeks. The other disadvantage of Macs is the serious difficulty upgrading hardware, it's like trying to upgrade a laptop (a Mac is a vertical laptop  ).
I'd abandon Windows in a flash if I could run all my essential appz on a Linux box. Hopefully that day will come.... |

I won't be able to avoid Microsoft or IE, as we use them at work, but after 13 years of Windows computers at home I must admit I'm impressed by the Mac. I like the way that everything is integrated and programs seem to work together well. And it's faster than the system in our office.

Well, progress at last.
I used Chrome and downloaded the same image yet again. When I downloaded it I added .gif to the filename. Up jumped a message box to warn me that the normal file type was jpg, but importantly it gave me the option of sticking with gif. I did so, and at last it worked.
I don't know why, but gif images seem to take up quite a lot more memory than jpegs. You're therefore more likely to fall foul of the 100kb limit. But it seems that for Mac users this is a method that will work at least some of the time.

I've downloaded and tried Opera but still couldn't change my avatar. Ditto Google Chrome.
If Firefox won't work, and we already know Safari can't manage it, I seem to be running out of options.
We may be looking up the nurse's skirt for some time...

Thanks folks. I knew I could rely on you.
It's true: I'm using Safari. In order to upload the nurse pic I had to 'save as' after I downloaded the image and add .jpg, but for some reason it hasn't worked with my new one.
Maybe Safari is too fond of the nurse?
I'll try another browser - though I expect I'll confine its use to this particular function. I've been pleased with Safari so far.
So no, Sean, I'm in no hurry to return to a PC, though thanks for the advice. |

I open IE find a pic, upload and then go back on FireFox for everything else. |

This problem can be easily solved with a hammer. And a trip to the shop to get a PC.
Alternatively have you tried different browsers? I have to use I.E. to change my avatars, Firefox won't work (although it's fine for the rest of the site), I know it's the same for other users. Fwfr is very particular about browsers for some features. I'm guessing you're using Safari, perhaps try Opera? I installed that on my Dad's old Mac a few months ago and I know it works fine.
I'm fairly sure there'll be nothing wrong with your images (unless they're over 100kB), the browser is likely the problem.
But please don't change your avatar unless you find one even better than your current one.
