Oh, this is so sad for a flowerchild like what I was. Way before the Fugs, Tuli, Sanders et al were legendary in the East Village - around Tompkins Square Park, for publishing a proto-magazine called Fuck You, A Magazine of the Arts. A coterie of hippies, dressed in olive green or black black black hung around the Peace Eye bookstore, yakking it up against the establishment. I was only on the periphery, but they always made me feel welcome, and what I remember about Tuli was his almost complete absence of ego. He'd ask something, and really, really listen to your answer, as though it mattered more than anything in the world. Probably the pot, or tea as they called it, but still ...
