Nothing in this posting is to support in any way Gaddafi's treachery against his own people or to encourage knee-jerk reactions against him and his supporters. Happily, it seems as though large numbers of those supporters are joining up with the long hard-done by civilians.
But, as a slight antidote to the pompous blow-hards I hear every day on the radio and t.v. - as though they are still in charge of the world - this morning I just heard a phonecall on one of the flagship radio news analysis programs, from a British man stranded in the desert. He was calling from a camp, normally providing temporary quarters for about 100 fellow countrymen as they worked there for an oil firm. When they found themselves cut off entirely, and had invited in about 200 other nationalities of workers from neighboring camps when local looters stole all their vehicles and food - they tried to ring the British embassy for help. That was a couple of days ago.
No one has gotten back to them. They've been totally ignored and are desperate. They estimate they have food and water for about one more day, and with 300 people living in facilities designed for a hundred, their desperation was audible in the man's voice as he tried to keep it together. They have no means of transport, and the irony is there's a fairly large airport not far away - but too far for them to reach it.
About five minutes previously on that radio program, there were two so-called experts in the region's affairs pontificating about this and that.
You know, I think the peoples of the world who've been ignored in the face of the obscene ambitions of the elite, wherever they are - I think that's what's motivating their several populist revolts.
They're not scared of whether or not a fundamental change in the instruments of repression will bring what's often called anarchy. They say - enough is enough and whoever you are Mr Government of east or west or north or south or left or right or straight or curved or green or purple - whoever you are who are ignoring the plight of all the oppressed - enough is more than enough and we're not going to take it anymore.
People will find their own way out of anarchy. Anarchy doesn't look so bad compared with the abuses of power, whoever commits them.
