Thoughts and prayers go out to those caught up in this.

Keep safe, everyone.

We were on a flight friday afternoon to tokyo when the earthquake struck. We were about 2 hours out from narita airport and were diverted to fukuoka in southwest japan. Spent the night there courtesy of singapore airlines, who rearranged the flight to tokyo for 2pm today.

Spoke this morning to my mate living in Tokyo, with whom we were supposed to be having dinner tonight at the "kill bill fight scene restaurant" - he said the city was still chaotic, and that he had spent the night under the table with his wife and kids, all wearing helmets. His tv and other assorted stuff fell/broke during the aftershocks. He explained that tokyo residents were very used to earthquakes, but that this was something terrifying.

After speaking to him we surprisingly decided to skip the offer of our rearranged flight and are exploring the south of japan instead, far away from any earthquakes or nuclear reactors.

the whole country seems shaken though; the few japanese in fukoaka that have been able to say more than a few sentences to us in english have all brought up the earthquake before they've gotten to the third sentence

the people here have been incredibly warm and helpful, and all I can offer is my condolences and concern for a country in shock

Thanks so much for sharing that with us, bife. Even with pix and reports coming in, there's too much contradiction to know what's true or not. But those vids of the relentless waves ... no movie could be scarier.

I hope your fam and pals are safe, and, as others have said, soothing thoughts to everyone affected from Siberia & Alaska down the coast of N & S America and across the whole Ring of Fire region.
