I don't know if any of you Brits caught the National Theatre of Great Britain's production of WAR HORSE, but I just got back from its New York mounting at Lincoln Center Theater, with an all-American cast, and it was one of the greatest theatrical experiences of my life.
The puppetry is *uncannily* beautiful, especially when the horses are at rest and exhibit minutely observed equine movements and sounds [it takes three artists to perform each horse]. The puppet designers/directors are so skillful and exacting that you look right past the operators. The scenic design, sound, lighting, performances, music -- all of them are spectacular, by which I mean they are, together and separately, a spectacle.
Spielberg's forthcoming Christmas film will of course use real horses to tell this same powerful story, but this may just be one of those instances where people say, "yeah, but you should have seen it on stage." Is it still playing in London? Then get down there and see it: don't wait for the movie.
Magnificent. Words fail me. |
